Herdade de Mujadarem

In the heart of the Alentejo, near Alvito, a property full of history—with Roman roots and a strong ancient religious presence—is stepping into the future through a new wine project. This is how the brand Herdade de Mujadarem was born.

The Saramago family’s passion for art, architecture, and wine led to the planting of a vineyard here in 2017, followed by the construction of a modern winery, which became operational in 2024—receiving its very first harvest that same vintage!

As the first wines from Herdade de Mujadarem began to emerge, the family also embarked on restoring the Convent of São Francisco, a publicly classified heritage monument that stands as a symbol of the Benedictine presence in the region.

The “villa” of Mugia D’Arem was already mentioned in handwritten documents from the year 1261, describing the existence of a small settlement, with religious figures, a modest convent, and a hermitage. Although the estate’s origins go back even further—evidenced by Roman construction remains—it is the year 1261 that symbolically anchors the Herdade de Mujadarem brand, particularly due to its Benedictine ties.

The property features around 15 hectares of vineyards, and every aspect of production—from viticulture to the winery—has been designed to achieve wines of excellence. Let’s do this!
